Serving information: Knowing the number of servings is the first thing that determines the size of your cake. For example, you can't make a cake for 300 people that's only one tier high (unless you have huge doorways). Nor, can you make a cake for 25 people that's 12 tiers high unless you decide to use artificial styrofoam layers.
The boxes below should help you decide how many servings you an expect to get out of various shapes of cakes and will help you determine the size you need, if you want to use artificial layers, or even add additional servings with sheet cakes.
Although serving sizes will vary depending on who is cutting the cake, the numbers of servings listed are based on pieces about 4 to 5 inches high and 1 by 2 inches wide. When comparing the prices of cakes be careful to consider the number of serving each baker determines per layer size. Since most cake designers charge by the serving, this can quickly increase the price of your cake.
